Pokemon Red and Blue Walkthrough

Cinnabar Island Gym

Cinnabar Island’s Pokemon Gym specializes in fire-type Pokemon. However, you have the option of passing up every single, normal Pokemon Trainer in the gym. All you have to do is interact with the small terminal next to each Trainer to receive a Pokemon quiz. Get it right and you can move onward. Get it wrong, and you’ll be forced to battle the nearby Trainer. Alternatively, you can test your Pokemon knowledge and battle them if you got it right! The answers and Trainers are listed below.

Cinnabar Island Gym Leader: Blaine

Like the rest of the gym, Blaine specializes in fire-type Pokemon. He will have Growlithe, its evolved form Arcanine, Ponyta, and its evolved form Rapidash. Since these Pokemon have relatively equal defense than special stats, you can use any of fire’s weaknesses: water, rock, and ground-type attacks.

All four of Blaine’s Pokemon will use a mix of physical and special attacks, though Fire Spin is what you need to keep an eye out for. Fire Spin will trap your Pokemon and prevent them from using any moves as they get slightly damaged 2-5 turns. Use a Pokemon with a high speed stat to attack before Fire Spin immobilizes your Pokemon.

Arcanine will have the strongest fire-type attack in the game: Fire Blast. It’s very powerful and may cause a burn on your Pokemon, but it’s not very accurate. If any of your Pokemon do get burned, use a Burn Heal or Full Heal to quickly restore their status. The longer a burn lasts, the more your Pokemon’s attack stat will decrease as a side effect.

Defeat Blaine to earn the Volcano Badge and TM38 Fire Blast! The Volcano badge increases your Pokemon’s special stat.

With that taken care of, there’s one final Pokemon gym to challenge before obtaining all eight badges. Head back to Viridian City now to find the final gym. If you fly back, you can challenge the gym instantly. If you surf back, you can challenge a few more trainers north of Cinnabar to gain a little more experience.
