Celadon City Gym
The Celadon City Gym is located on the far southwest side of town. Use a Pokemon that knows Cut to access the building. Not only is this a grass-type gym, but it’s also an all-female gym. Not even the guy who gives you tips on defeating gym leaders will be here. You can still find him in the Game Corner, however.
This gym can be tackled from different directions. There are a total of seven normal Pokemon Trainers and the one Gym Leader. You need to find Erika, the Gym Leader, by cutting down one of the three bushes near the center of the room. Two Pokemon Trainers can be found a few steps north of the entrance.

Celadon City Gym Leader: Erika
Erika can be a tough opponent if you go into this battle carelessly or under-leveled. Two of her Pokemon are at level 29, and the other one is the only pure grass-type Pokemon in the game! That means you’ll have to rely on only grass-type weaknesses (fire, ice, flying, or bug-type) instead of an additional set of poison-type weaknesses (psychic, ground, or bug-type). It’s best to hit as hard as you can and in as few turns as possible.
Once Victreebel uses Wrap or Tangela uses Bind, you won’t be able to use any move until its attack stops. Becoming poisoned will make things far worse. Not only will you be unable to move from the continuous attack, but your HP will reduce each turn from the poison!
Vileplume might be the toughest opponent. It can put its enemies to sleep or poison them, deal massive grass-type damage for 2-3 turns with Petal Dance, and restore its HP by draining health using Mega Drain. Of course, the game’s AI isn’t as smart as a person. Vileplume might become open to attacks after using Petal Dance because it causes confusion.
If you chose Charmander at the beginning of the game, now is its time to shine! Dugtrio is another good option. Yes, ground-type Pokemon are weak to grass-type attacks, but Dugtrio should be fast enough to move first, and its ground-type attacks are super effective against poison-types. Other options from nearby are Growlithe, Vulpix, or Abra. Growlithe and Vulpix can evolve instantly with a fire stone from the department store, but that will prevent them from learning any more moves through leveling up – though Technical Machines will still be fine. Flying-type Pokemon are also very common, and a powerful Flying-type attack can be found in the secret hideout to the west of Celadon City. See the Celadon City page for more info.
Defeat Erika to receive the Rainbow Badge! This makes Pokemon up to Level 50 obey in battle, and allows your Pokemon to use Strength outside of battle. You will also receive TM21 Mega Drain, a grass type attack that allows the user to absorb half the HP from the enemy.
